UMR: Installation Example

Overview

The keyboard shown in this example is a Yamaha VSS-30. Wiring and assembly will vary by target device. See the installation notes for more information.

Step 1: Assemble the UMR circuit board.

See the illustrated assembly notes.

Choose either "scan-high" or "scan-low" assembly, depending on the notes for the target keyboard. Set the DIP switches as described in the notes.

Step 2: Attach the hook-up wires.

Attach a length of wire to the pads on the UMR circuit board:
  • MIDI "4" and "5"
  • "+5V" and "GND"
  • Power & Activity LED terminals (optional)
  • "SELECT IN" and "DATA OUT" as described in the install notes.

Step 3: Disconnect power from the target device.

Disconnect any external power cords and remove any batteries from the target keyboard. After disconnection, move the keyboard's power switch to the "on" position to drain any stored charges.

Step 4: Mount the MIDI jack & LED bezels on the target device.

The MIDI jack requires a 5/8" hole and the LED bezels require 1/4" holes.

Step 5: Mount the UMR circuit board.

Mount the UMR circuit board inside the target keyboard. Use the provided adhesive foam. Make sure that the UMR does not make contact with the internal wiring of the target.

Step 6: Wire the UMR to the target.

Connect the UMR to the target keyboard as described in the install notes.

Step 7: Wire the UMR to the MIDI Jack and LEDs.

Superglue can be used to cement the LEDs to the bezels.

MIDI jack wiring is described in the assembly notes.

Installation Complete

Connect the UMR to the "MIDI OUT" port on any MIDI sequencer or MIDI controller.
