MIDI CPU: Instant DIY MIDI Controller
May 17, 2010 - Link - Discuss

The new MIDI CPU accepts input from switches, potentiometers, rotary encoders, switch matrices and external digital & analog signals.  In response, it generates virtually any type of MIDI message.  Buy now!

The MIDI CPU ships fully assembled.  Simply attach MIDI connectors, control components, and a battery or DC power supply.

Features include:

  • 24 independent input terminals
  • Monitors up to 128 switches, 14 potentiometers, or 12 encoders
  • Allows mixed input types
  • Merges MIDI input with locally generated messages—multiple units share a single MIDI Out port
  • Powered via battery or DC supply between 3.3V and 12V
  • Measures only 66mm x 38mm (2.6″ x 1.5″)
  • Configured via MIDI SysEx message
  • User-upgradeable firmware

The MIDI CPU has a long list of potential applications.  Build your own traditional footswitch, keyboard, or “knob box” controller.  Build your own alternative MIDI controller—optical theremin, fret-based controller, etc.  Generate MIDI note patterns or CC waveforms from digital or analog signals.  Re-purpose a “consumer” keyboard, calculator, game controller, or other electronic device as a MIDI controller.

These possibilities will be explored with “how-to” information at the blog and forums.

Inline MIDI Connectors
March 16, 2009 - Link - Discuss

Male and female inline MIDI connectors are now available.  An inline connector can be hardwired to a MIDI decoder or MIDI encoder board in applications where a panel-mounted socket is not desirable.

MD24: 24-Output MIDI Decoder with Servo Control
October 27, 2008 - Link - Discuss

The new MD24 MIDI decoder accepts MIDI input from a keyboard, sequencer, or other MIDI controller and in response generates up to 24 independent output signals.

Each output can provide either a general-purpose on/off trigger or a PWM servo control signal.

Features include:

  • 24 x Independent 5V digital logic output
  • Control via MIDI note, CC, program change, and other messages
  • User-configurable MIDI response and PWM signal characteristics
  • Compatibility with RC servos
  • Standard MIDI IN and MIDI THRU ports
  • PCB-mount MIDI connectors or optional remote connectors
  • Output solder terminals with optional solderless terminal blocks
  • Standard 26-pin output header for connection via ribbon cable

The MD24 is available either as a kit or fully assembled.  PDF documentation is available at the product page.

New MSA MIDI Decoder Kits
September 12, 2007 - Link - Discuss

The firmware for the MSA-P, MSA-R, and MSA-T kits has been updated. Each output can now be independently configured via SysEx message. Control options include MIDI Note, Program Change, Controller (CC), and Start/Stop messages. The original DIP switch configuration scheme is still available by default.

The MSA hardware has also been revised. The new kits feature a gold-finished circuit board that is lead-free, but can be assembled using either traditional tin/lead solder or lead-free solder.

UMR: Universal MIDI Retrofit
April 10, 2007 - Link - Discuss

The new UMR kit adds a MIDI input to large range of “scanned matrix” keyboards. Most non-velocity sensitive keyboards are of the scanned matrix type.

Installation has been documented for the following keyboard models:

  • Casio DM-100
  • Casio MT-210
  • Casio RAP-1 (Rapman)
  • Yamaha VSS-30

Documentation for additional keyboard models will be posted as installations are performed.

The UMR is not compatible with the Yamaha CS01. There may be a CS01 kit in the future.

MPA: MIDI-to-Potentiometer Kit
February 22, 2007 - Link - Discuss

The new MPA kit is a flexible MIDI decoder. Applications include DIY filter circuits, circuit bending, and MIDI-to-DIN sync conversion. Features include:

  • 4 x MIDI-controlled potentiometer output
  • 8 x MIDI-controlled digital logic output
  • Easy configuration via a single MIDI system exclusive message
  • Power & activity indicator LEDs
  • 1 x MIDI In port; 2 x MIDI Thru port

The potentiometer outputs provide variable resistance in 128 steps from approximately 100Ω to nominal values of 10kΩ, 50kΩ or 100kΩ. MIDI response is real-time.

Each potentiometer output responds independently by MIDI channel and message type. Control options include note number, note velocity, controller (”control change”; includes modulation wheel, breath controller, sliders), channel pressure, pitch wheel, and program change. The digital logic outputs can be configured to respond to note, program change, or sync messages.

The MPA has the same compact form factor as the MSA kit, and is compatible with inexpensive SERPAC S-Series (x5x) enclosures.

MIDI2600: MIDI Adapter for Atari 2600
January 10, 2007 - Link - Discuss

The new MIDI2600 kit translates MIDI data into Atari 2600 joystick & keypad control signals. It provides instant MIDI control for Synthcart and creates possibilities for scripted game performances via MIDI sequencer.

The MIDI2600 works with any Atari 2600 console and is compatible with any cartridge that uses joystick or keypad input. The internal version is hardwired inside the console, while the external version connects via joystick cables.
